Wear It Wednesday: 5 Ways to Style a Denim Jacket

Happy Wednesday loves! The past few Wear It Wednesday posts have been focusing on accessories, so I wanted to switch things up today and talk about my favorite piece in my wardrobe, plus the most versatile piece – a denim jacket! As you have probably noticed on the blog, I LOVE denim jackets. They’re perfect for the unpredictable weather in NYC because I can easily throw it on if it’s chilly or tie it around my waist or drape it over my shoulders if it’s kind of warm. In today’s WIW tutorial you’ll see 5 different ways to update your denim jacket. Whether you’re feeling like a rockstar and try The Off-The-Shoulder look, or put a twist on your old chambray shirt and wear your jacket as a shirt instead (see #3!), you’ll have 5 new ways to wear your denim jacket this season. Enjoy! xo

1. The Off-The-Shoulder Look

We’ve been seeing the off-the-shoulder trend take the fashion scene by storm the past few seasons, and this look is a great alternative to your going-out tops. I don’t know about you, but I felt like Rihanna in this look.

2. The Sporty Tie

This is a classic 90’s parent-approved look. I cannot tell you how many vacation photos I have from my childhood where my multi-colored windbreaker, or denim jacket was tied around my waist. Well, the trend isn’t going anywhere this season (and I’m not even mad about it), so whether you want the jacket just in case it’s cold, or want to embrace the sporty look, tie it around the waist and head out the door!

3. The Updated Denim Shirt

Who says you can’t wear your jacket as a shirt? Button your jacket all the way up, as you would a button-down chambray top, and perfection! I love how the jacket looks more polished and structured than a chambray top. I paired my jacket with a darker wash pair of jeans for that “Canadian Tuxedo” feel, but broke up the outfit with a long silk  button-up and cuffed the sleeves.

4. The Shrug

Are you feeling daring yet, but the Rihanna cold-shoulder look isn’t your thing? Try “The Shrug” by keeping one shoulder out (I wore a graphic tee underneath for extra coverage) and tie a large belt over the jacket to define the waist. This look works the best with a thin chambray-type jacket or anorak because a thick denim jacket will look bulky.

5. The Fashion Editor Signature

I never truly embraced the “The Drape” look until I came to NYC but love that I still get the coverage of a jacket but can move my arms freely and the jacket won’t completely cover an outfit. I wear my jacket like this the most while sitting at my desk or a party.
