A New Yorker's Guide to Wearing All Black During the Summer

All black during the summer? I guess I’m officially boycotting summer and looking forward to cooler weather and darker colors. But let’s be real, all black outfits are a New Yorker’s staple! For today’s post I’m talking about how to wear all black during the summer months without completely overheating 😉 . I got this lace dress a few weeks ago when I posted my Wear It Wednesday: 5 Ways to Style a Slip Dress. I nixed the black tee undershirt and paired the dress with a graphic tee instead and a pair of cropped jeans. The dress was perfect for layering, but I also wanted to style it on it’s own for a post. I paired the dress with a  strappy bralette, a belt and tied an oversized bandana around my neck to complete the look.

My 3 rules for wearing all black during the summer are as follows:

1. Wear Lightweight and Breathable Fabrics

If you’re going to wear dark colors, you don’t want to weigh yourself down; wear fabrics that are lace, sheer or cotton.

2. Minimize Your Layers – Focus on Proportions

You know I’m a lover of layered outfits (give me all of the leather jackets please!) but when it comes to beating the heat, I reluctantly hang up the jacket and focus on cool proportions. Do a longer midi dress, or pair an oversized tee with shorts. When you play up proportions or accessories, you won’t feel the need to layer!

2. Play with Accessories

Speaking of accessories, spice up your look with some! They can be as simple as a belt or bandana, or get more creative with sunnies and detailed shoes. I avoid heavy statement necklaces or bracelets during the summer because (to be honest) they make me feel gross after walking around in the humidity and heat.

Do you ever wear all black during the summer? I’d love to hear in the comments how you beat the heat and still rock your New York uniform. xo

Wow! It’s really a useful and amazing post. I like layering. Layering is the key to a happy life. Just remember to keep the fabrics light. Stick to cotton and sheer fabrics and be the trendsetter!
