4 Must-Have Lipsticks for Fall

Oh hello there! If you have been following SAK for a while, or if you’re new (welcome BTW!), you have noticed that I’m a lipstick aficionado. I own way too many lipsticks to count; I have multiple storage cases in my bathroom separating them my color family, type and size. But despite the plethora of lipstick tubes I’m hoarding in my mini NYC apartment, I always gravitate towards the same four colors during the fall and winter months. I rarely go a day without something on my lips and today I’m walking you through the my four go-to shades and how I style them. After this post, make sure to check out THIS POST where I give away my secrets on how I make my lipsticks last all day long—through multiple coffees, lunch and more!  Now let’s talk about lipstick! xo

On days that I’m rushing out of the door or wanting to give my lips a little bit of a color break, I break out my nude lipsticks. My go-to’s are Chanel, Charlotte Tilbury (pictured here) and MAC. These brands seem to stay the longest and I like both of the creamy and matte shades. There are also a lot of variation in the nude family so you can find something to match your skin perfectly. I typically look for a more “rose” nude or something with a hint of pink so it doesn’t completely wash out my face.

Ohhhh baby. I think red was the first shade I really started experimenting with in college and it has been my favorite ever since. Since moving to NYC, my makeup has become a lot lighter and my routine has cut down significantly. I typically let my lips be the focus point so I love that a red lip can completely transform a look, plus it can be worn year-round. During fall and winter months, I look for a deeper or more brick red, and during summer and spring, I go for a more poppy or cherry red.

In college I discovered the MAC rebel shade which is the perfect berry, and I haven’t let go since! You’ll see me wearing this about 80% of the time during the colder months and I have noticed that this shade works great with any skin tone. In today’s post I am wearing Elizabeth Arden, another one of my favorite lipstick brands.

For the dramatic day, or daring look, go a few shade darker and opt for a plum or deep purple lip. I love this smoked purple from MAC. To ensure that the color lasts all day, I line and fill in my lips with a coordinating lip liner, and then the plum color is always matte. Deep colors that are a creamy base, typically run or fade faster, so look for a matte that you can always swipe on some gloss or chapstick on top if you’re looking for a glossy effect.
