Is it just me, or is this winter harsher than ever? No matter where I go I feel like the cold knocks me off my feet. Now don’t get me wrong, I love a good layer. I still try and layer a jacket in the summer and I’m in my fashion prime during fall and winter. With fashion month coming around the corner, it’s the constant struggle of looking chic while staying warm. Do you ditch the puffer or no?
My suggestion for conquering a chic layered look is to coordinate your outfit. I know, I know…I’m normally one for mismatching, pattern mix and opposing colors, but the key to having a unified chic look that you won’t have to take of your coat is to match color palettes, coordinating colors and silhouettes.
Below we are sharing five tips for creating the perfect layered look this winter. Happy layering! xo
Tip 1: Play With Length
Play with length; alternate between long, short, long and short. This will make your look visually interesting plus you’re able to wear more pieces. To accomplish this look pair a long length blouse or top, a short jacket, a longer trench style jacket and then a cropped pants. Add patterns, complimentary colors and different fabrics to make it more interesting.
Tip 2: Double Sweater
To achieve an effortless layered look this winter layer two sweaters at once. First, put on a thinner sweater; I usually suggest a turtleneck of sorts. Then layer a chunkier sweater over the thinner sweater. This is one of the easiest layers for winter but you need to make sure that the two sweaters look well together.
Tip 3: Tuck n’ Roll
One of the simplest winter layering tricks is tucking and rolling. For example wearing statement socks and tucking your pants into them; this 1) keeps you warmer in cooler weather and 2) adds a statement to your outfit. I also suggest tucking sweaters into jeans or pants into boots around this season. For rolling, I always suggest rolling up your sleeves on your top layer jacket. This will allow everyone to see your sweater or your under layer sleeves.
Tip 4: Recycle Warmer Weather Clothes
This is one of those layering tips that will help you not look like Frosty the Snowman. Warm weather clothes are made out of lighter materials which means they are easily layered. Layer a sweater or a turtleneck under a summer dress, tights under a skirt or pair a silk blouse with a sweater. These are easy ways to use your summer pieces in winter while mixing it up. I love the idea of wearing a super colorful summer dress during winter—not only will it brighten up your entire look, but it’l help you stand out in the crowd.
Tip 5: Accessorize
Hats, scarves and belts – oh my! These are the perfect accessories to layer with. Hats and scarves are a no given that add warmth and fashion to your look and now so are belts. Belts help define the smallest part of your waist and add something extra to your look. Play around with chunky, skinny and all kinds of belts until you find the right one for your look! My tip is to belt light layers and let chunky layers be!
